Our facility in Damietta, Egypt primarily supplies domestic and European markets.Located on the Mediterranean Sea, our plant in Egypt is among the most energy-efficient methanol plants in the world.
Methanex is the sole producer of methanol in Egypt and has been operating in the country since 2011. Methanol designated for the local Egyptian market is marketed by our partner, the Egyptian Petrochemical Holding Company and the remainder supplies our customers in Europe.
Through our unique partnership with the United Nations’ International Labor Organization (ILO), we align our Social Investment strategy with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by extending the full scale of the ILO’s Decent Jobs for Egypt’s Young People (DJEP) project to Damietta addressing one of Egypt’s most pressing challenges—that of youth unemployment and underemployment. In recognition of our contributions to the enrichment of micro, small and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) culture in Damietta, in 2019, we received the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) Humane Entrepreneurship Award.
In 2020, we signed an official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to embed the culture of Process Safety Management (PSM) within the Egyptian oil, gas and petrochemicals sector, in alignment with the Ministry’s modernization program. The MoU resulted in the formation of the Egyptian Process Safety Management (PSM) Steering Committee and a three-year roadmap for the industry.
