We are Methanex: the world’s largest producer and supplier of methanol to major international markets in North America, Asia Pacific, Europe and South America.

Headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, Methanex currently operates production sites in Canada, Chile, Egypt, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States.

Our global operations are supported by an extensive global supply chain of terminals, storage facilities and the world’s largest dedicated fleet of methanol ocean tankers.

Methanex starts as Ocelot, an oil and gas exploration company based in Calgary, Canada

1968

Our first methanol plant opens in Kitimat, Canada.

Methanol business splits off from Ocelot and incorporates as Methanex, also listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ.

1992

Methanex becomes world’s largest supplier of methanol through acquisitions, corporate partnerships and expansion projects including Metallgesellschaft, Fletcher Challenge and NOVA’s Medicine Hat facilities.

1992-94

Methanex completes construction of Distillation III at Motunui, New Zealand.

1994

Methanex starts own shipping company, Waterfront Shipping, to deliver methanol around the world.

Chile II plant begins production.

1996

Methanex becomes the first chemical company in the world to be globally verified to Responsible Care, a United Nations-recognized sustainability initiative.

1997

Methanex commits US$10 million to build terminal at Yeosu, Korea, to serve Asian markets.

Chile III plant begins producing methanol.

1999

Methanex acquires remaining 90% ownership of Titan facility in Trinidad after having a 10% interest since 2000.

2003

Atlas Methanol – the world’s largest methanol plant at 1.7 million tonnes per year – comes on stream in Trinidad.

2004

Methanex’s joint venture facility in Egypt, produces first methanol and begins making deliveries to customers.

2011

Methanex and Carbon Recycling International sign landmark investment agreement for advanced renewable fuel production.

2013

Methanex produces first methanol from Geismar I and Geismar II plants in Louisiana, which were both relocated from Chile.

Methanex and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines finalize agreement for strategic shipping partnership.

2021

Methanex's subsidiary, Waterfront Shipping, in partnership with MOL, completes first-ever net-zero voyage fuelled by bio-methanol.
